Manzanos Wines

EFFORT, PERSEVERANCE AND SELECTION LEAD QUALITY IN MANZANOS WINES.

After a complicated year, Manzanos Wines closes the 2020 harvest with a very satisfactory evolution of grapes in terms of maturation and sanitary state. However, for operational matters and processes, it has been necessary to implement strict security protocols to contribute to the maximum protection of the health of everyone involved.

Manzanos Wines has worked to «contribute to a harvest that, although certainly atypical, is remembered as a safe harvest where it has been absolutely necessary to design protocols that establish safe processes in order to protect the health of seasonal workers, employees and visitors” according to Borja Ripa, technical director and winemaker of the winery group.

As we advanced above, 2020 has been a complicated year in terms of health and field work; marked by an early bud break, consequence of an a unusually warm winter reaching historical maximum temperatures (In February we reached over 20 ºC). The beginning of spring was, pluviometrically speaking, quite abundant, reaching between the month of March and April more than 200 liters per square meter, which made the vine cycle quicker than last year. In contrast, the summer was very hot and dry, which slowed the ripening of the berry.

According to Borja Ripa, “The beginning of the harvest in Manzanos Wines has been delayed compared to last season, but the good sanitary state stands out and refers to the size of the bunch and the weight of the berry, being  greater than in 2019, around 10% higher “.

In mid-September, when the harvest is already underway in Manzanos Wines, whose extension of vineyards is distributed throughout all DOCa Rioja and DO Navarra subzones, we had to stop the harvest since we suffered a heat wave, which could have caused unwanted fermentations and thus losing quality of the grape and,  therefore,  the profile of wines that we seek, always working from the excellence of our raw material.

According to Ripa, the 2020 harvest at Manzanos Wines has been very calm, slow, selective and very long, ending in October the 20th. It highlights the very satisfactory evolution of the ripening of the grape, a very good health condition in addition to a lower presence of malic acid in this campaign and a higher PH than previous years.

“I would like to conclude – adds the technical director and oenologist of the winery group- with an axiom that year after year leads the harvests in Manzanos Wines: only by knowing perfectly the vineyard, the type of tannin and the aromatic profile of the varieties that each estate gives us we can obtain the wines that currently we make at Bodegas Manzanos”
